Borgesius has received approval from the Netherlands Authority for Consumers & Markets (ACM) for the acquisition of Bakkersland Groep B.V. (Bakkersland). The Works Council had already made a positive recommendation. This means that Borgesius and Bakkersland can now take a crucial next step in their shared ambition to bake tasty, fresh, and honest bread throughout the country. In this way, the baker is trying to further improve the image of bread.
National artisan baker
Borgesius and Bakkersland together have nearly 2,000 employees, most of whom work in the twenty bakeries across the Netherlands. By merging the two companies, we are investing in knowledge, technology and product sharing, so that we can keep serving the market better. The bakeries are supported by Bakkersland’s head office in Hedel, north of ‘s-Hertogenbosch. Every day, the bakeries produce fresh bakery products, such as bread and pastries, which they deliver to shops in their area. The group’s consolidated turnover is approximately € 480 million.
Jan Borgesius, Owner-Manager of Borgesius: “For several years, we have been concerned at how many articles and publications are tarnishing the image of bread as a tasty and healthy basic daily foodstuff. We want to turn this around and ensure that our daily bread’s image is restored to its former glory. We believe Bakkersland is our perfect partner for this. Our age-old bread culture must be preserved. By acquiring Bakkersland, we are taking a major step. We want to innovate while respecting traditional processes, Soon, we will be producing 600,000 delicious, healthy loaves of bread every day. We are delighted with the Netherlands Authority for Consumers & Markets’ approval and the Works Council’s support.”
Borgesius and Bake Five
Since 1997, Borgesius has been a member of Bake Five, a cooperative of independent industrial bakeries in the Netherlands. Bake Five looks after the purchasing, sales, and marketing of its affiliated bakeries. Following the acquisition, Bake Five and Borgesius’ ambitions and strategies diverged to such an extent that they decided to go their separate ways.
Frits Borgesius, also Owner-Manager of Borgesius: “My brother Jan and I are very grateful to the other Bake Five members for the years of cooperation within Bake Five, of which we were one of the founders at the time. We are sorry to say goodbye, but in this way, we will be better able to pursue our ambitions. Borgesius’ expertise and Bakkersland’s professional organisation represent a unique pooling of resources.”
